UN says Ukraine recalling peacekeepers from 5 more operations
WASHINGTON, March 11 – Ukraine is withdrawing its personnel from five more UN peacekeeping operations, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Thursday, reported Sputnik.
On Monday, the Ukrainian parliament said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had decided to recall Ukrainian peacekeepers from all over the world to engage in hostilities against the Russian armed forces.
“We had mentioned their intention to withdraw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is about 250 troops and eight helicopters. We have now received further request from Ukraine to withdraw remaining uniform personnel serving with five other peacekeeping operations – Mali, Cyprus, Abyei (area on the border between South Sudan and Sudan), South Sudan and Kosovo,” Dujarric told reporters.
This new request includes 250 troops, 36 staff officers and experts on mission, 22 police officers, he added.
Dujarric noted that any UN member state has a right to withdraw its peacekeepers.
“The withdrawal process is underway,” he said.
On Feb 24, Russia began a special military operation in Ukraine after the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics requested help in defending themselves from intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began with attacks by land, sea and air.
In response, Western nations have imposed comprehensive sanctions on Moscow.- BERNAMA
