Five hours to clean up chemical waste spillage at hospital clinical waste store
MELAKA June 10 – Firemen took nearly five hours to clean up chemical waste leaking from its container, at a clinical waste storage in Hospital Melaka, here yesterday.
It was believed that one of the staff in the store was referred to the hospital for treatment due to breathing difficulty.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) Expert, Zulkhairani Ramli said that the Ayer Keroh Fire Station received an emergency call at 5.37PM informing that there was chemical waste spilt out from its container while being transferred.
“22 members of the Hazmat team was dispatched to the scene to control the incident,” he told reporters at the scene yesterday.
He added that the team took almost five hours to clean up the affected areas and the operation ended at 10PM.
